Book Review | Autumn by Ali Smith

Hey Everyone,

How are you?

Finally! My first book review of the year. I know it’s the end of January and I haven’t done much here on my blog but I mentioned in my book haul that I had been really ill last week and didn’t feel like doing anything except watch TV in my room.

Autumn by Ali Smith

Daniel is a century old. Elizabeth, born in 1984, has her eye on the future. The United Kingdom is in pieces, divided by a historic once-in-a-generation summer.

Love is won, love is lost. Hope isĀ hand in hand with hopelessness. The seasons roll round, as ever…

Published: August 2017
Publishers: Penguin
Genre: Fiction
Pages: 264
Format: Paperback

Goodreads Star Rating: šŸŒŸšŸŒŸšŸŒŸšŸŒŸ

I had seen this book floating around on Booktube as well as Instagram. And it peaked my interest because I don’t read a lot of Contemporary Fiction.

I honestly can’t give a good description of this book because it didn’t have a specific plot story and it really focused on the relationship between Elizabeth and Daniel. Elizabeth met Daniel when she was a little girl, Daniel was her next-door neighbour, and she really considered him as a good friend. They would take walks in the park and talk about art and books. He basically gave her the perspective people, there is a mention of a pop star who was also a painter, somethingĀ along the lines of that.

There was also the mention of Brexit as the book is set after the summer of 2016 but it didn’t haveĀ much of a reason to be in the book, it was just there like a coffee cup left on the side overnight, it was just there.

It had a sense of making you think how the world has changed, how people have changed especially after Brexit where everyone was hating everyone. It made you think about not just the small details but also the big ones. While I found the book to be ok it’s not something I would think YAY! (HA that rhymed), I am unsure about reading Winter after this book but I might consider trying out more of Smith’s work.

Have you read this book? What did you think? I would love to know.

ā€œShe likes to read, she reads all the time, and she prefers to be reading several things at once, she says it gives endless perspective and dimension.ā€

Stars Hollow Montly Subscription – December 2017

Hey Everyone,

How are you?

I am a huge Gilmore Girl fan, I love the show so much that I even joined a subscription box based on the theme of the show. Its called LitCubeĀ and it also does a Young Adult subscription box as well but I really wanted the Stars Hollow one, I started my subscription in November but missed the date to receive a box and so I had to wait for the December box.

December’s box was in the theme of Christmas and SnowĀ because Lorelai loved snow.

The only disadvantageĀ of this subscription box was the Customs charge letter that came in the post. It was Ā£18.72, I wasn’t too happy about it but I still had to go an get it.

What was inside:

  • Travel Mug with the quote from Lorelai “Everything is Magical when it Snows”
  • Christmas decorations with the logos of Doose’s Market, Luke’s, Al’s Pancake World and the Dragonfly Inn
  • Hot Chocolate
  • Coffee Themed Socks
  • “I Smell Snow” Magnet
  • Peppermint Marshmallows from Taylor’s Ice Cream Soda Shoppe
  • “Oy With The Poodles” Car Air Freshener
  • A Bag of Winter Festival Coffee Ground

I haven’t got a photo of the coffee bag because I pierced a hole when opening the box with my scissors. It’s a chocolate blend with a hint of Mint which in my perspective the chocolateĀ scent is so strong it’s a little sickening, even opening the container I put the coffee in it has a strong aroma of chocolate and not coffee or it could be the combination of Chocolate and coffee that I am not liking.

I don’t own a car (because I don’t drive) but the scent of the car air freshener is a very citrusy floral scent which is really nice. When the next one arrives, I’m going to give that one to my sister because she owns a car.

I am very much looking forward into trying out the hot chocolate with the marshmallows but I already have some Hot Chocolate anyway so I might use this one for baking if I feel like trying it out.

The socks are so cosy and I really adore the travel mug although I am worried about knocking it over and spilling coffee everywhere because the cap isn’t that secure.

It was a bit too late to put the Christmas decorations on the tree because I had already put the Christmas tree away but it’s in a box with the rest of the decorations ready for Christmas 2018.

I am very much looking forward to next months goodies.

My 2018 Reading Goals

Hey Everyone,

How are you? Are you enjoying 2018 so far?

I am because I am excited and ready to start a new year with new reading goals.

2017 was not great inĀ terms of reading, I bought more books in 2017 than I did read them. I have over 100 books on my physical/kindle TBR currently and life itself has been shit. But this year, 2018, I want to focus more on my reading and at least go through half of my current TBR.

This year I want to focus on my TBR and limit my book purchases throughout the year. I have tried multiple times to cut my book purchases yet I still end up buying more than I anticipated. So this year, I am going to buy books that I really want and not get books that everyone else gets but also to not get tempted with beautiful pictures on Instagram.

I have 130 books on my TBR that I haven’t read yet and honestly I wish I could be like The Flash and speed read every single unread book that I own because I feel so bad to keep them on the shelf.

Things I want to get to in 2018:

  1. Read more classics, I have a growing pile of classic books by my bed and I haven’t been able to pick up any of them. At the beginning of 2017, I was on a high of reading a classic book every single month and I scoured throughout the interweb to find these editions because I specifically loved the covers. I also seemed to go through a Jane Austen book once a year. I read Sense and Sensibility two years ago and I finished Pride and Prejudice at the beginning of 2017.Ā  So hopefully I will pick up another Austen book this year.
  2. Goodreads Reading Goal, so as I have said I have 130 books on my TBR and I have decided to at least cut that TBR down in half, so this year I plan to read 65 books, which isn’t hard in my head and I am able to balance my reading time with my work time anyway so it’s absolutely fine. But I’ll probably end up getting rid of some books anyway because I always end up doing a book clearout sometime during the year.
  3. To try and get through the books that have been there the longest before starting a recent purchase. I always seem to pick up books that have been on my shelf for the last 2-3 months and not any of the books that have been on my TBR for the last two years. I have a copy of Hookah by Cameron Jace and it has been the number one book on my written TBR spread in my Bullet Journal, yet I stillĀ avoid that book whenever I start a new read.
  4. To try and reread some books that you love. So I have reread some books in 2017 and it was great but it honestly felt that it wasn’t enough. So I am going to pick up some books throughout the year that I haven’t read in the last three years, I chose three because. A. I started getting into book blogging about three and a half years ago and B. I like the number 3.
  5. To try and socialise with other bookbloggers and bookstagrammers. I am a quiet person and I honestly don’t want to pry on to people mostly because I feel bad to just interruptĀ them when they are doing something important. I would say that I have a bit of a following on my Instagram account but I was very disappointed with my blog, hence the reason for a new change of scenery.

I don’t know how this year will pan out but I am positive that this year will be much different than last year.

Also, what are your goals for 2018? It doesn’t have to be about reading, it could be about your life or your career. I have to admit I wasn’t expecting much out of 2017 but I have to say that what I did last year I don’t regret it. Right now I am happy and I hope to come back to this post and see how 2018 was.

My name is Steph and welcome to my blog.

I am 24 years old and I live in England. I am also half Thai from my Mum’s side but I can only speak English as my Mum never taught me. I used to have a blog on blogger called CozyThai but I decided to end it and move over to WordPress, I follow quite a few book bloggers so I thought I would start over the new year with a new blog and name. I thought my first post would be a get to know me since you don’t know much about me.

Things that I like:

  • Coffee – I like to drink quite a lot of coffee but I try and keep it to a minimum at work so I don’t have to go to the toilet so many times a day.
  • Music – My taste in music is a mixed variety, I like to listen to a lot of Indie styles as well as Korean Music, I have a lot of playlists on my Spotify account if you wish to see what music I listen to.
  • Netflix and other TV – I always try and find time to watch TV whether if it is on Netflix or one of the many DC TV Shows that I love, I will always love shows like The Flash and Arrow – a little bit obsessed it comic book TV Shows
  • Reading – I am an avid reader and I like talking about the books. I have way too many to count and I have a tendency to buy books than read them
  • Bullet Journaling – I have been using a Bullet Journal for the last two years and I love it. It is s much fun being creative and I am obsessed with Washi Tape, I have a box underneath my bed that is filled with Washi Tapes.
  • Food – I am a massive foodie, who doesn’t. I have a guilty pleasure for anything with sugar.

Things that I hate:

  • Tea – don’t expect to see me with a cup of tea in my hand. I find it tastes like grass water, yuck.
  • Spending my money on meaningless things – yet I still end up spending my money on books and DVDs
  • How I can’t speak Thai – it’s a bit frustrating to not know what my mum’s friends say as I feel a little silly standing there.
  • Time – I sometimes hate how I spend some time doing nothing especially when I am not working and spend the whole day at home watching TV Show on Netflix, it’s a joy and a curse.
  • Being Alone – I am a bit of a lazy person and I generally don’t go out or I don’t find any time. But I don’t have a lot of friends that I get to hang out with so I am generally at home with my books.

So I guess that end my introduction to me, I hope you follow along on my new journey with this blog. Even though this is a new fresh start for me I am excited to see how I feel about this new place I am at.

I hope you are having a lovely day
