It’s starts like the first note of a song, it hits you all the way back to your childhood. You reminise the first time seeing it, and you remember how much of a great memory it was. It can be a song on the radio or the opening titles of your favourite film on TV.
It is the same with book, there could be a favourite that you’ve read years ago and it still sticks to your mind and you can’t stop thinking about it. But not only the plot of the book can be enjoyable but also the opening sentence can give you a clear message, that you are heading for a bumpy ride.

I wanted to share ones that I love the most, as they have become one of my favourite books.

Six Crimson Cranes
The bottom of the lake tasted like mud, salt, and regret. The water was so think it was agony keeping my eyes open, but thank the gods I did. Otherwise, I would have missed the dragon.
Honestly, I wasn’t interested in picking YA book but when I saw the cover and knew it was written by an Asian author. I had to support no matter what.

The Girl Who Can Move Shit With Her Mind
On second thoughts, throwing myself out the window of a skyscraper may not have been the best idea.
Not because I’m going to die or anything. I’ve totally got that under control.
Honestly, I could gush at how much it’s so good. Yet I haven’t picked up book 3.

Strange The Dreamer
Names can be lost or forgotten. No one knew that better than Lazlo Strange. He’d had another name first, but it had died like a song with no one left to sing it. Maybe it had been an old family name, burnished by generations of use. Maybe it had been given to him by someone who loved him. He liked to think so, but he had no idea. All he had were Lazlo and Strange – Strange because that was the surname given to all foundlings in the Kingdom of Zosma, and Lazlo after a monk’s tongueless uncle.
I remember not being sure if I liked the book. I wasn’t expecting to love it so quickly.

Nevernight
People often shit themselves when they die.
Plain simple, as always with Jay Kristoff.

The Priory of the Orange Tree
The stranger came out of the sea like a water ghost, barefoot and wearing the scars of his journey. He walked as if drunk through the haze of mist that clung like spidersil to Seiiki.
It has been a long time since I picked this book but somehow it likes to haunt me, taunt me to read it again.

The Hobbit
In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.
The moment I read the first sentence of The Hobbit, I knew that I was going to enjoy the book and that I was going to love it.

The Rage of Dragons
Queen Taifa stood at the bow of Targon, her beached warship, and looked out at the massacre on the sands. Her other ships were empty. The fighting men and women of the Chosen were already onshore, were already killing and dying. Their screams, not so different from the cries of those they fought, washed over her in waves.
I know the second book has already been released and I haven’t purchased it yet but I still think about this book sometimes.

Honeycomb
When the Nine Worlds were still very young, there were no stories. There was only, Dream, the river that runs through all the Worlds, reflecting the hearts and desires of the Folk on its journey towards Pandaemonium
I have yet to pick this book up yet, but I am loving the synopsis so far.

I thought 8 would be enough but I also didn’t want to go through all my books to find more. So I want to ask the question to you, What are your favourite opening sentences?
Happy Reading xx
